yup things have taken an unexpected turn, I pray that this is the right move for now. But here’s what I’ve been up to, helping Joel to draw images for his client’s site. Just some stuff I’m using to feed myself for now. Those curious and those who need help with A level Physics can take a look at the site, its still WIP tho.

I’ve always considered myself an easy sucker for much of Marvel’s propaganda. Prism/multiple/variant covers and huge-ass crossovers appealed to me since I could remember when I started to buy comics. I was as Stan Lee(the man) would put it, a “true believer” of all things Marvel.
Over the years, Marvel has matured, and no longer uses prism covers to attract fan boys like me. (the variant covers and huge-ass crossovers still remain tho, oh they added cardstock covers too) Storylines too have changed. Gone are the events that are cosmic in nature (those being ones that became huge-ass crossovers) Instead now we have storylines that are more in touch with the lives (albeit personal) of the heroes of the Marvel Universe.
Which brings me to recent (major) events from Marvel. From Avengers Disassembled (only looked at that recently), House of M (a good read), Secret War (great art, but took too long to come out per ish) to the now hot on stands Civil War. Which pretty much ties in to every single Marvel book right now. (See, new marketing strategies from Joe Q and gang)
I liked the idea, the general premise that because of the damage and casualties caused by heroes unchecked, that the govt wanted to push for a Superhuman Registration Act. By the act, all meta-humans or superheroes would have to be registered and be under SHIELD jurisdiction. Their identities would no longer be secret and they would be accountable to the public this way. It was all quite cool to me that they would try something like this (totally believable) thing in the Marvel U. So i bought into it.
This has inevietably caused a split between the super hero(and super villain) community, with Captain America and Iron Man heading each side. Cap does not agree with the Act, and chooses to round up his comrades to oppose it to the end. Iron Man on the other hand has always seen it coming, and has been working hand in hand with SHIELD and the President to make sure the rest comply. And so begins the Civil War…
Much has happened, Spidey revealed his identity to the world, pronouncing his support for the act, and then later jumping ship to Cap’s side, upon realizing that the heroes who did not comply were being incanerated in the Negative Zone, in a Gulag like detention center named the “42″. And with the Thor clone killing Goliath, the Invisible Woman and Human Torch leaving the FF, and Ben Grimm leaving the country altogether, causing “the end” of the FF.
It is now at issue 6, and it is clear, as Doc Strange put it, its not a matter of right and wrong anymore, but of perspective. And really, right now, what both sides are concerned about now, is winning. And they have had casualties, and soured friendships. But ultimately who wins? The Act IS Law, and those who are against it face persecution from the govt. And if the reforms weren’t put in place, what would face them would be a complete ban of super heroes. So in this sense, Iron Man’s side is fighting to save that, whilst Cap is fighting for their freedom.
Its odd, now it has built up, with the last pages of the issue, to a final face off between the two sides. I wonder how its gonna be resolved with the final issue next month. One though has to wonder, has that been Marvel’s plan all along? Is this just another excuse for (huge-ass crossover, familar?) an all out super hero brawl? Can Mark Millar prove something good out of this? Some lasting effect and repercussion on their lives, especially Spidey’s. Or the return of the REAL Thor or maybe the Hulk might put an end to it. I wonder what mr. Millar is up to..
